Fifth Annual AYSO Skills Day Draws Huge Crowds

photo 2

This weekend, the UCSB Soccer team hosted the fifth annual AYSO Skills day at Harder Stadium. The event lasted from 2:30-6:30 and saw crowds of over 1000 young AYSO players looking to improve their soccer skills. The day consisted of an exhibition from the Futboleros USA Team, face painting, pictures and autographs from gaucho soccer players, and players clinics. The players clinics included fun activities, interactive games, shooting, juggling, dribbling, and passing skill sets.
Players from both UCSB men’s and women’s teams came to help out at the clinic. They coached the players clinics and helped the younger players find their confidence on the field. Greg Wilson, the assistant coach for the UCSB Men’s Soccer team says, “It’s great to see the whole soccer community come together today. It is a fantastic opportunity for our players to mentor the youth of our community and interact with the players, parents, and coaches. We all really enjoy sharing our knowledge of the game with the kids. ” Everyone left with a smile on their face from a Sunday afternoon well spent!

On October 5, 2012, the Men’s Soccer team hosted another Gauchos Give event where Hands4Others invited local churches to the game, and a presentation prior.

After the presentation, children attended the game against UC Irvine for free, and adults received half price tickets.  Santa Barbara Community Church, Covenant of Christ and Ocean Hills Church all attended the presentation to learn more about Hands4Others’ mission.

“All Church Night was a great way to give back to the community,” said Sydney Lee, director of Men’s Soccer Operations.  “Hands4Others is an involved non-profit group that had an important message for everyone who came.

Hands4Others is a non-profit organization that strives to provide filtered water for communities without access around the world.  Hands4One has implemented clean water in over 20 countries in Asia, Africa and Central America.

Lakey Peterson, UCSB alumni and professional surfer, also spoke to the group about ways to get more involved.
