Gaucho Guest Coaching

Each year, UCSB student-athletes donate over 5,000 hours of their time to community service in the Santa Barbara and Goleta area. Our Gaucho Guest Coaching program takes players from the men’s and women’s soccer teams and matches them up with local youth soccer teams to teach basic soccer skills.

This year, 21 of our Men’s Soccer players, including National Team of the Week player Achille Campion, volunteered their time to run practice sessions for 22 different local youth teams.

Gauchos Give

Dozens of students from Goleta’s Hollister Elementary School were in attendance at Harder Stadium during last Friday’s 2-1 victory over Valparaiso, as a part of Gauchos Give. Gauchos Give is a program that invites schools, nonprofits, and churches from the community to attend UCSB home games.

Each school or organization that signs up pays a special discounted rate of $6 per ticket, and kids 8th grade and under get in for free. The Hollister Elementary students were able to participate in several activities throughout the game, including the pre-game player introduction tunnel, face painting, pictures with Olé, and post-game autographs.

2012 AYSO Skills Day

For the third consecutive year, the UC Santa Barbara soccer programs teamed up with local American Youth Soccer Organization Region 122 for AYSO Skills Day. This year’s event, which was held at UCSB’s Storke Field on Saturday, Aug. 25, drew over 1,500 AYSO players, families and coaches.

The event was presented free of charge to all AYSO players, coaches and families that chose to attend. Throughout the day, the UCSB soccer players participated in skills training with AYSO players and coaches also had a chance to attend a free clinic. Additionally, AYSO players received autographs from the Gaucho student-athletes and had their faces painted.

“Skills Day this past Saturday was a tremendous success,” head men’s soccer coach Tim Vom Steeg said. “We had over 60 men’s and women’s soccer players take part in the different clinics we had, but we think there was over 1,500 kids and families out (there).”
