Equipment Donation Brings Excitement to Local Elementary School

Last week, the Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams participated in a “Passback Program,” where members collected some of their new and gently used equipment, comprised of soccer balls, uniforms, field markers and a gear bag for donation to be redistributed to a local grade school.

The Gaucho donations went to Cleveland Elementary School. The children were very excited to receive new equipment, and the faculty expressed how grateful they were that Gaucho Soccer chose to help these children live a healthy and active life.

2012 Relay for Life- Men’s Soccer Report

May 11 – It was a very emotional start to the weekend as many UCSB Organizations participated in the 24 hour long Relay for Life held at Pauley Track. The funds raised for this event save lives by funding cutting edge cancer research. The Men of the Gaucho Soccer Team came to show their support for the cause and honor victims and cancer survivors alike. The day was filled with events, music, and camaraderie, but the night reminded every participant why they were there with a heart wrenching candlelight vigil for those who have lost their lives to this terrible disease. Matt Glodack, Student Athlete Advisory Board Representative and the team’s Relay for Life captain, expressed how important it was to the team to be able to participate in this event. “So many of us have been impacted by loved one’s who have battled cancer, it meant a lot to us to be able to walk in their memory and support everyone there walking for the same reason.”

UCSB Hosts McKinley School Field trip

On Thursday May 10, UCSB hosted McKinley Elementary School’s 5th grade for their fieldtrip, a group of 60 enthusiastic students. They spent the morning in good ol’ Chem Lab, learning what UCSB academia is all about; but the real fun came in the afternoon when the children were able to meet and play ball with members of the Men’s Soccer team. Players Christian Vasquez, Mac Cerceo and Kevin Garcia- Lopez escorted the students to the fields and put on a mini soccer clinic for them. They answered questions about proper technique, how to be a student athlete and spoke to the kids about what a great experience it is to study at UCSB. Spending time with these players really rounded out McKinley’s fieldtrip and made the children excited about student athletics in higher education.

Champions to Champions

Friday, April 27 was an exciting day for our Santa Barbara community, as Isla Vista Elementary School finally achieved their goal of becoming a California Distinguished School. To show their support for this great achievement, the UCSB Men’s Soccer Team players Josue Madueno, Alex de Leon, Matthew Glodack and Machael David; as well as the UCSB Women’s Soccer Team players Arielle Ariniello, Taylor Gehring, Haley Guerrero, Catherine McFarland, and Miranda Cornejo stopped by the school’s dual congratulatory assembly. As part of the UCSB Soccer Staff, I (Tara Willard) had the opportunity to be there with everyone for this event. It was awesome to see how excited the students and staff members were about their special visit.

These star athletes shared their stories and delivered an inspirational speech about what being a champion means to these very bright and talented elementary students.

Josue Madueno and Machael David were part of UCSB’s 2010 Men Championship team, and told to the children about the hard work and dedication it took for them to earn their title. The Gauchos ended their visit by gifting a 2010 autographed soccer ball to the school, and congratulating the students on making our community very proud.
