Birthday Surprise!

This past Sunday, April 22, players Duncan Backus and Marshall Cazares from the UCSB Men’s Soccer team stopped by 8 year old Aidan’s house for his soccer themed birthday to help get the party started. The Gauchos wanted to surprise Aidan for his big day, and they succeeded. The birthday boy was all smiles when the players arrived, because he has been a Gaucho Soccer Fan for quite some time. The Gauchos juggled a soccer ball with him and his friends, sang him happy birthday and helped finish eating the huge cake. Duncan and Marshall said they had a great time and were glad they could help make Aidan’s birthday a memorable one.

Gauchos Give

The Men of the Gaucho’s Soccer Team take great pride in their community service involvements. In addition to their work with local organizations, the soccer team is also part of the Gauchos Give Tix Program, which provides free blocks of tickets to schools, non-profits, and charitable groups to attend one of their exciting Division 1 college games. But the fun doesn’t stop there. As part of the program, kids receive free admission to the Interactive Kid’s Zone (a carnival like area filled with soccer specific games and activities), the opportunity to be on the field for the player introduction before kick-off, and a post game autograph session with the UCSB Men’s Soccer Players.

Heroes for a Day

4/11/2012 -Today, one of UCSB’s star soccer players Timothy Pontius showed up in uniform at La Patera Elementary School in Goleta to participate in the Junior League of Santa Barbara Heroes for a Day event. Tim read the book “The Great Kapok Tree” to a very excited 2nd grade class. After finishing the book, Tim fielded questions about his role as part of UCSB gaucho soccer. He ended the day by gifting the book to the class and leaving them with high fives and words of encouragement. “It was great!” said Pontius,“They had fun and so did I.” The men from the soccer team are happy to give back to the community through programs like these. “Getting involved within the community has huge value for our student athletes,” said assistant coach Greg Wilson. “We pride ourselves on giving back and love to assist wherever we can.”
